10 Best Cities for Digital Nomads 2026

Low-cost cities with good infrastructure, English-speaking scenes, and strong remote-work communities — ranked by real cost-of-living data.

Lists of best digital-nomad cities are everywhere, but most of them rely on opinion or out-of-date numbers. We took a different approach: rank by actual scraped cost-of-living data, then filter to cities that meet a minimum population threshold (so you get real infrastructure, not just a beach town with one café). The result is a list weighted toward the middle of the cost spectrum — cities cheap enough to extend your runway but big enough to actually live in.

The short answer

Cheap by itself doesn't make a good nomad city — you also need infrastructure, a community, and a livable centre. Most genuinely good nomad cities sit in the middle of the cost-of-living index, not at the extreme bottom.

The ranking

Sorted by cost-of-living index (lower = cheaper). Only one city per country is shown in the top of the list to avoid the ranking collapsing to a single region. Click any city to see its full per-category breakdown.

Reading the list

Cost index here is a single number per city — useful as a first filter, but it averages across categories that don't all matter equally. If you mostly cook at home, grocery prices dominate your budget; if you rent in the centre, housing does. The detail pages break every category out so you can re-rank by what matters to you.

Bottom line

The bottom-of-the-index cities (Sofia, Bucharest, Belgrade) are dramatically cheap but smaller and harder to plug into as a foreigner. The top picks for most remote workers tend to land in the middle of the ranking — affordable enough to matter, urban enough to function. Pair this list with the comparison tool to swap in your specific destination shortlist and look at category-level numbers for the lifestyle you actually plan.
