Toronto vs Vancouver: Cost of Living 2026

Canada's two rival metros compared on real scraped prices. The monthly totals land within 5 % — and Toronto's transit costs 23 % more than Vancouver's.

Vancouver is Canada's byword for unaffordable housing, Toronto its default big-city option — so most people assume the cost comparison is a blowout. The scraped single-person numbers tell a different story. We pulled current centre 1BR listings, supermarket baskets, restaurant menus, monthly transit passes, and utility bills for both cities and summed them the way our comparison tool does. The totals land closer than almost any pairing we've run, and the categories that create the remaining gap aren't the ones the headlines talk about. One caveat baked into the method: this is a renter's snapshot — Vancouver's affordability crisis is mostly a property-price and detached-home story, which a monthly rental total only partly captures.

La respuesta corta

Toronto and Vancouver land within 5 % of each other on the full monthly total — $2,206 versus $2,310 — much closer than Vancouver's unaffordability reputation suggests. Vancouver's 1BR rent is only 9 % higher in the scraped data, and Toronto claws back most of that with transit that costs 23 % more.

Vancouver resulta aproximadamente un 1% más barata que Toronto en el total. Ese es el titular — lo más interesante es ver qué categorías marcan esa diferencia.

¿Cuál deberías elegir?

On a renter's monthly total the two cities are nearly interchangeable: Vancouver's rent premium is $109 on the 1BR ($1,372 vs $1,263), groceries run 6 % higher, restaurants 3 % — and then Toronto hands part of it back with a transit pass that costs 23 % more than Vancouver's ($172 vs $139). Utilities are a dead heat at $192-193. So pick on everything except cost: Toronto for the bigger job market, more direct flights, and the financial and tech head offices; Vancouver for the mountains, the mild winter, and the Pacific time zone if your work leans toward Asia or the US West Coast. The one financial angle that does differ meaningfully is buying — but as a renter, the famous affordability gap between these two has, on current data, almost closed.
