Most UAE cost comparisons put Dubai against Singapore or London. The more practical question for anyone actually moving to the Emirates is the one 90 minutes down the E11: Dubai or Abu Dhabi? The two cities compete for the same expat workforce, share a currency and a tax regime, and yet price very differently. We pulled current scraped numbers for both — centre 1BR rents, supermarket baskets, restaurant menus, transit and utility costs — and summed them into a single-person monthly total. There's no tax asymmetry to muddy the comparison here, which makes this one unusually clean: whatever gap the categories show is the whole story.
Abu Dhabi is about 33 % cheaper than Dubai on the full monthly total — $1,969 versus $2,957 — and it's cheaper in every single category we track. Since both emirates have zero income tax, the gap is pure cost: you're paying a premium for the Dubai brand, mostly through rent.

So which one should you pick?
Abu Dhabi wins on cost across the board — there is no category in our data where Dubai is cheaper. The premium is concentrated where you'd expect: rent ($1,804 vs $1,072, a 68 % gap) and eating out (+38 %), with utilities (+23 %), transport (+25 %) and groceries (+21 %) adding steadily on top. What Dubai buys you for the extra $988 a month is the bigger city: more flights, more nightlife, a deeper job market outside oil and government, and most of the region's tech and media scene. If your work lives in Dubai, that premium is just the price of admission. If you can work from either — or your employer sits in the capital — Abu Dhabi delivers the same tax-free salary at two-thirds the burn rate.
