Portugal's two main cities compared on real scraped prices. Porto is 35 % cheaper than Lisbon — and almost all of it is one line item: rent.
Porto has spent the last few years being marketed as 'Lisbon ten years ago' — the escape valve for everyone priced out of the capital by golden visas, short-lets, and the nomad wave. We wanted to know how much of that is real, so we pulled the current scraped numbers for both cities: centre 1BR rents from local property portals, supermarket basket prices, restaurant menus, transit passes, and utility bills. The monthly totals below sum those categories for a single person, the same way our comparison tool does. The short version: the Porto discount is real and large — but it lives almost entirely in rent.
Porto comes out about 35 % cheaper than Lisbon on a full monthly total — $2,331 versus $3,601 — but the gap is really one line item: a Lisbon 1BR in the centre costs 65 % more. Strip housing out and the two cities are much closer than the headline suggests.

So which one should you pick?
The full-month totals say Porto, clearly — $2,331 against Lisbon's $3,601, with the centre-1BR rent gap ($1,650 vs $2,728) doing most of the work. But notice what happens outside housing: transport is only 19 % apart, utilities 20 %, groceries 27 %. If your rent is fixed — you own, or your employer covers housing — the two cities converge fast. Pick Lisbon if you need the bigger airport, the larger international scene, and the capital-city job market. Pick Porto if you're paying your own rent and want the same coastline, the same food culture, and roughly $1,270 a month left over. That's not a rounding error; that's a salary difference.
